What is DKIM?
DKIM means Domain Keys Identified Email, which is a cryptographic technology created by Cisco and Yahoo. DKIM is now an “Internet Standard”, since September 2011. The purpose of DKIM is to allow the recipient to check whether the email received was indeed sent by the actual owner of the domain name, therefore reducing spam and phishing emails.
How does it work?
- The sender adds a digital signature (a private key) to its domain name, to each outgoing email.
- The recipient’s server verifies the signature by looking up sender’s DNS.
Why DKIM matters?
Just like Sender Policy Framework (SPF). DKIM is an email authentication method designed keep email as a trustworthy communication channel by reducing email spam and phishing.
Usually, when an email is being sent, the receiving email server performs multiple real-time checks and decide whether to allow the email into recipient’s inbox or mark it as spam/bounce it back. DKIM is now an essential email authentication method that every business should implement into their email configuration, to ensure maximum email deliverability.
